Hardware Checklist

What you need to use Scribble, how to check an iPad you already own, and recommendations when buying new.

You don’t need the latest iPad to use Scribble. We recommend an iPad (9th generation or newer). An 11-inch screen is recommended for the best experience and is our most-tested size, not a requirement.

What you need

  • An iPad running iPadOS 18.3 or later. We recommend installing the latest iPadOS version available for your iPad.
  • A compatible Apple Pencil: Apple Pencil (1st generation), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), or Apple Pencil Pro, depending on your iPad model.
  • A paper-texture screen protector. We recommend Astropad Rock Paper Pencil or an equivalent that fits your iPad. Sold separately.
  • An internet connection throughout each session.

Pressure sensitivity is not required. Apple Pencil (USB-C) is supported when paired with a compatible iPad.

Already have an iPad? You may not need to buy anything new. Our testing is concentrated on 11-inch screens, and we haven’t tested every iPad model or screen size. If your iPad meets the iPadOS and Apple Pencil requirements above, try Scribble on it.

Check your iPad and Pencil

Check Settings → General → About for your model name and iPadOS version, then compare it with the recommendations above.

Before buying a Pencil, check which Apple Pencil works with your iPad in Apple’s official compatibility guide. Choose the model that is compatible with your iPad; pressure sensitivity is not required.

An iPad (9th generation) pairs with Apple Pencil (1st generation) through its Lightning port.

Buying a new iPad?

Choose from the recommended models above based on your budget. You don’t need the latest chip or an iPad Pro. An 11-inch screen is our most-tested size and recommended for the best experience.

Before checkout, use Apple’s official Pencil compatibility guide to choose a compatible Pencil and check whether you need a pairing or charging adapter. Include the Pencil and any required adapter in your budget.

Accessories for any setup

  • Apple Pencil grip (optional). A comfort accessory; remove it if it blocks magnetic pairing or charging.
  • Headphone adapter (if needed). Only needed for wired headphones when your iPad doesn’t have a headphone jack. Match the adapter to your iPad’s port.
  • Thin iPad cover (optional). Adds a small lift that some children prefer for writing.

Spare pen tips

Keep a replacement tip compatible with your Apple Pencil. Replace a worn or damaged tip before writing, following the tip manufacturer’s instructions.

What you don't need

You do not need a keyboard, mouse, external monitor or printer to use the app. We encourage everyday writing on paper alongside Scribble so your child can use their growing skills beyond the screen.
