Hardware Spec Sheet
iPad and Apple Pencil buying guidance, accessories, and classroom charging tips.
You don’t need the latest iPad. We recommend an iPad (9th generation or newer) running iPadOS 18.3 or later, with a compatible Apple Pencil and an internet connection. An 11-inch screen is our most-tested size and is recommended, not required.
Already have an iPad? You may not need to buy anything new. Our testing is concentrated on 11-inch screens, and we haven’t tested every iPad model or screen size. If your iPad meets the iPadOS and Apple Pencil requirements above, try Scribble on it.
Buying an iPad specifically for Scribble? Choose one of the recommended models in our hardware checklist, or contact us before purchasing.
Choose a compatible Apple Pencil (1st generation), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), or Apple Pencil Pro. Check Apple’s official Pencil compatibility guide for the pairing for your iPad. Pressure sensitivity is not required.
Buying a new iPad?
Choose from the recommended models in our hardware checklist based on your budget. You don’t need the latest chip or an iPad Pro. Include a compatible Apple Pencil and any required pairing or charging adapter in your budget.
Accessories for any setup
| Accessory | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Screen protector | Required: Astropad Rock Paper Pencil or an equivalent paper-texture protector that fits your iPad. Sold separately. |
| Pencil grip | Optional comfort accessory; remove it if it blocks magnetic pairing or charging |
| Headphone adapter | Only needed for wired headphones on an iPad without a headphone jack; match it to your iPad’s port |
| Thin iPad cover | Optional; adds a small lift for writing |
Spare pen tips
Keep a replacement tip compatible with your Apple Pencil. Check the tip for wear or damage and follow its manufacturer’s replacement instructions.
What you don't need
- No keyboard. Scribble doesn't use one.
- No mouse. Scribble is touch + Pencil only.
- No external monitor.
- No printer, paper, or workbook. The curriculum lives in the app.
- No special Wi-Fi setup. A normal home or school Wi-Fi connection is enough.
Charging strategy for classrooms
For a classroom of iPads:
- Charge overnight. Both the iPad and the Apple Pencil should be on chargers when the school day ends.
- For Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (2nd generation), center the Pencil on the compatible iPad’s magnetic connector. Remove a grip or case if it prevents a secure charging connection.
- Have a small number of spare Apple Pencils and adapters in case one gets damaged.
