Getting Started
iPad & Pencil Setup
Physical setup steps: pairing the Apple Pencil, charging, screen protector, grip, and spare pen tips.
This page walks through the physical setup of the iPad and Apple Pencil. Do this once, before the child's first session.
Pair the Apple Pencil
First check Apple’s Pencil compatibility guide and turn on Bluetooth in iPad Settings. Scribble does not require pressure sensitivity; Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with a compatible iPad.
Apple Pencil Pro pairs when you center it on the magnetic connector on the side of a compatible iPad. Follow any on-screen pairing prompt.
Apple Pencil (2nd generation) also pairs and charges magnetically on the side of a compatible iPad. Check Apple’s Pencil compatibility guide before pairing.
Apple Pencil (1st generation) on an iPad (9th generation) plugs directly into the iPad’s Lightning port to pair. On an iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16), use the USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter and a USB-C cable to connect it to the iPad.
Pairing didn't work?
Check compatibility, Bluetooth, and the connection first. See Apple Pencil pairing and charging for model-specific recovery steps.
Charge the Apple Pencil
For Apple Pencil Pro, center it on the magnetic connector on the side of a compatible iPad. Check its charge in the iPad’s Batteries widget or Settings → Apple Pencil.
Check the connection
If a grip or case prevents the Pencil from sitting securely on the magnetic connector, remove it before pairing or charging.
For Apple Pencil (2nd generation), attach it to the magnetic connector on the side of the iPad to charge.
For Apple Pencil (1st generation) on an iPad (9th generation), charge through the iPad’s Lightning port. On an iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16), charge using the USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter and a USB-C cable.
For Apple Pencil (USB-C), slide open the end and connect it to the iPad with a USB-C cable to pair and charge.
Screen protector
A paper-texture screen protector is required. We recommend Astropad Rock Paper Pencil or an equivalent that fits your iPad. Sold separately. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions before the first session.
If the protector peels or scratches deeply, check the manufacturer’s replacement guidance.
Headphone adapter
The iPad (9th generation) has a headphone jack for wired headphones. On iPads without a headphone jack, use an adapter that matches the iPad’s port. AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones work without an adapter.
Spare pen tips
Use replacement tips compatible with your Apple Pencil. Check that the tip is secure and undamaged before writing. Follow the tip manufacturer’s instructions when replacing it; do not keep writing with a worn or damaged tip.
Once everything is set up
You're ready to install the app.
