Curriculum Content Types

The seven content types, how they fit into curriculum entries, and which ones award XP.

Scribble combines instruction, handwriting practice, reviews, and activities. A curriculum entry can contain several steps: finishing one lesson or activity completes that step, not necessarily the whole entry. The entry is complete when all its required steps are complete.

Lesson

Focused handwriting practice on letters, strokes, or words. Lessons earn best-run XP: the first completed run earns its run XP; later runs earn only the improvement over the previous best.

Review

Practice with material introduced earlier. Reviews use the same best-run XP rule as lessons.

Warmup

A short activity to get ready for handwriting. Warmup awards fixed XP at most once per day, using your Family or school’s timezone. Additional warmups that day award no extra XP. Warmup does not complete a curriculum entry.

Unit Intro

An introduction to a unit’s material. It awards fixed XP on its first completion, with no additional completion XP on replay.

Intro Lesson

An introductory lesson that guides the student through a new concept. It awards fixed XP on its first completion, rather than best-run XP.

Assessment

A handwriting check at a curriculum checkpoint. The tasks depend on the assessment. It awards fixed XP on its first completion, with no additional completion XP on replay.

Required Activity

An automaticity drill or application activity included as a required curriculum step. It awards fixed XP when first completed. It is different from optional play in the activity hub.

What comes next

Scribble’s server determines which steps are available, whether a completed step can be replayed, and what comes next. Follow the options offered in the iPad app rather than assuming every completed item is always available to replay.

XP awarded by any of these content types counts toward the daily goal. Completing a step or entry does not by itself extend a streak: the student must meet the daily XP goal. The app may also offer a conditional Fast Write top-up to help finish that goal.

How long is the curriculum?

Based on our early pilot at Alpha School, we estimate the core curriculum takes about 20 hours of practice. Each child’s pace varies, and families can choose a routine that works for them.
