Troubleshooting
iPad Not Recognizing Writing
When the iPad isn't picking up strokes correctly, here's the diagnostic order.
If Pencil strokes are missing, skipping, or broken, first separate a blocked Scribble screen from a pairing problem. Neither a missed stroke nor missing pressure response proves a hardware fault.
1. Check the screen and connection
Scribble's writing canvases accept Apple Pencil input only on iPad. Writing with a finger is not a fallback for a disconnected Pencil.
If a connection blocker or dialog is covering the writing area, address that screen first. Scribble requires an internet connection to learn, complete content, and save; it does not support offline practice.
If a save is pending or has failed, keep Scribble open and restore connectivity. Do not sign out, force-quit, reinstall, or restart the iPad as the first step: work already saved to the server remains there, but unsaved drawing buffers and pending writes may be lost.
2. Check the Pencil model, pairing, and battery
Confirm the exact iPad/Pencil combination against Apple's compatibility list. Check that Bluetooth is on and the Pencil is paired, and check its battery in the Batteries widget or Settings → Apple Pencil.
Pairing and charging differ by model. Follow Apple Pencil pairing and charging rather than assuming every Pencil charges magnetically.
Apple Pencil (USB-C) does not support pressure sensitivity. A lack of pressure response on that model is expected, not a defect. Check iPad & Pencil setup for Scribble's hardware requirements.
3. Check whether the issue is specific to Scribble
Once the current Scribble work has saved, try drawing a few simple lines with the Pencil in Apple Notes using its drawing tools.
- If the Pencil works in Notes but not in Scribble, note which Scribble screen is affected and contact Scribble support.
- If it also fails in Notes, follow Apple's pairing checks or contact Apple Support. This comparison helps narrow the issue; it does not identify a faulty Pencil, tip, or iPad by itself.
If you notice visible damage, stop using the damaged item and seek hardware support. Do not assume that replacing a tip, grip, or screen protector will resolve an unexplained writing problem.
4. Restart only after protecting unsaved work
If the problem persists and there is no unsaved work to protect, use the normal restart steps for your iPad:
- Without a Home button — including models with Touch ID in the top button: hold the top button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears.
- With a Home button: hold the top button until the power-off slider appears.
Drag the slider and let the iPad turn off. Hold the top button until the Apple logo appears to turn it on again. Re-pair the Pencil if needed, reconnect to the internet, and reopen Scribble.
See Apple's instructions for turning iPad on or off.
When to contact support
Email support@scribble.app if writing still fails in Scribble. Include:
- The iPad and Pencil models.
- The Scribble screen or activity affected.
- Whether strokes are missing entirely, skipping, or breaking.
- Whether the Pencil works in Notes and whether Scribble shows a connection or saving error.
Avoid including child names, account details, or unrelated personal information in screenshots.
